What a great day out on the trail. Rollins Pass West was everything I hoped it would be. It was an easy trail offering absolutely beautiful views and very cool history along the way. This time of year the fall colors at the lower elevations were stunning. The temperature was perfect and not a cloud in the sky.
The trail head is right off of Highway 40 on a trail labeled Corona Pass road. The trail winds up through the trees offering views of the valley below, Winter Park, and tremendous surrounding mountains.
3.5 miles from the trailhead you will encounter a major 4 way intersection. Continue straight on 149 to continue up Rollins Pass. Enjoy the easy trail, and stop to smell the roses.
10 miles into the trail you will find the rifle site notch bridge. This bridge is closed, not for driving on or foot traffic. This is also where the location of the Rogers Pass hiking trailhead. Cool short hikes.
12miles from the trailhead you can pull over and hike down to Deadman Lake and PumpHouse lake. You encounter them in that order.
13 miles into the trail you will encounter the lower parking lot, and the 501.1 trail. The lower parking lot is a great place to start the easy hike out to the second and third train bridges that can be hiked across. The 501.1 trail is the most difficult part of the trail. It is narrow and bumpy and the reason this trail receives its 3 rating. It is not passible by passenger cars, or even some low clearance SUVs. 501.1 is the trail that will take you to the Needle Eye tunnel.
15 miles and trail ends at the Needle Eye tunnel gate From here you can see Rollins Pass east, Yankee Doodle lake, and Rollins Pass lake.
From I-70 take US 40 over Berthoud Pass approximately 26.7 miles. You will see a sign for Corona Pass road. The trailhead is on your right.
